As one of the most sought after holiday destination for Germans and various other European citizens, Mallorca’s this year summer season is proving to be exceptional – in many ways. Is both delighting visitors with scrupulously clean and hygienic environments in hotels, stunning beaches with lots of space and the island’s countryside and nature at its best whilst trying to cope with the new travel restrictions for German tourists that came into force on August 15th.
Comments Eduardo Gamero, President of the Mallorca Tourist Board; “This summer is the most challenging in our 115 years of existence. However, the tourist sector has worked together to produce a system of rigorous protocols from the moment visitors arrive at Palma Airport, to ensure their safety and security. Mallorca’s reputation for innovation and quality in the tourism industry is coming through in these challenging times. This pandemic has created a totally new travel industry for us in the space of weeks. However, the island’s resilience is demonstrated in the response of the tourist sector”.
Palma Airport – travel safety & highest passenger movements in Spain
In order to protect the health of every traveller, in June all airlines and airports in Spain, including Palma, introduced special rules on hygiene, the pathway through the airport and general protocol whilst within the terminal. The feedback from international travellers confirms a positive response to these protocols and in the month of July, Palma’s International Airport handled over 1.1 million passenger movements, more than any other in Spain, highlighting the demand for the destination.
Travel with confidence to an island that is safe & secure
Many visitors might not be aware of the fact that Mallorca has one of the most modern health care systems in the Mediterranean with no less than five main public hospitals including the University Hospital Son Espases in Palma. In addition to six principal private hospitals, dozens of private clinics and over 60 local public surgeries throughout the island. Mallorca has years of experience in the health care of millions of tourists in a normal summer season with multi-lingual staff and leading specialists.
Highest standards of hygiene in hotels, restaurants and bars
The Mallorca Hotel Federation has imposed the strictest hygiene regime in all its hotels and has led the tourism sector. In addition, hotels are only allowed to operate at 50% of their capacity to maintain to ensure the health and welfare of guests. Similar protocols have also been introduced in restaurants and bars to ensure social distancing measures.
Further to the news on travel restrictions for visitors returning to Germany this weekend, many hotels will temporarily be forced to close despite the enormous work they have undertaken to guarantee a happy and healthy holiday for guests.
Destination Overview App
Mallorca has the most sophisticated travel industry in the Mediterranean with over 100 years of expertise and know-how and is a blueprint for quality tourism. Now, in the Playa de Palma resort, a new app is currently being testing to provide visitors with relevant detailed information in real time about movement in the resort, hotels, restaurants, state and capacity at the beaches, capacity in outside areas, events and details of emergency and health services.
Called the “Traveller Journey Assistant Platform” it is being developed by tourist industry start up “Agora Next Hub” in collaboration with Deloitte and Google with the objective to provide a “technological safe corridor” between countries of origin and holiday destinations such as Mallorca.
Renewed focus on autumn/winter
It is hoped that the German Government will re-evaluate the situation in the coming weeks to create a “safe corridor” to Mallorca so that tourists can enjoy the stunning autumn/winter months with mild temperatures, plenty of sunshine and warm sea.
Concludes Gamero; “On behalf of the island’s tourist sector, we appeal to the German Government to work with the island as a separate destination outside of the Spanish Mainland. Over 200 km separates us from the Spanish coastline and direct flights into Palma means that a journey can be controlled to reassure visitors and ensure their safety and enjoyment throughout their stay”.
