ALMOND BLOSSOM TIME IN MALLORCA

| January 30, 2014

Almond Blossom in MallorcaThroughout February and early March over four million almond trees around the island cover the ground with a delicate carpet of almond blossom, a scene which has inspired many artists and photographers throughout the years.  The Mallorcan almond is of superior quality with distinctive sweetness and high oil content and is used in beauty treatment preparations and for many traditional recipes including almond ice cream/cake and soup.  Here are a few suggestions to see and experience the best of this very special time on the island.

Walking in the Sierra Traumuntana

Seeing the almond blossom on foot is always popular at this time of year and walking in the Sierra Traumuntana (now a UNESCO World Heritage site) is one of the best ways to see the countryside and take in historic relics and places of interest.  Follow the ancient stone wall paths which run mainly through old bridle ways close to the higher peaks of the Sierra Tramuntana Mountain range. These stone wall paths are gradually being restored and when finished will provide a total a 150 kms of pathways to join the southern end of the Sierra Traumutana at Andratx to the north at Pollenca.

The route is divided into 8 stages and each stage will have its own refuge when the restoration is complete.  There are currently at least 6 refugees/hostals open around the island including: Tossals Verds, Muleta, Son Amer, Cam Boi (Deia); Punt Roma (Pollensa) and Hosta Castell Alaró).  For further information in English go to:
