Michelin “stars”

Mallorca’s food and wine scene continues to attract national and international attention with no less than 5 Michelin stars this year: a new entry is the Es Fum Restaurant in the St Regis Mardavall Hotel, Puerto Portals; Es Moli d’en Bou at Sa Coma; Es Raco d’es Teix Restaurant, Deia; Jardin Restaurant, Puerto Alcudia and Zaranda Restaurant (which has moved from the Hilton Sa Torre Hotel to the new five star rural hotel Castell Son Claret in Es Capdella).

Repsol “suns”

In addition, Spain’s prestigious “Repsol” guide has just announced its national gastronomy awards for 2014 awarding for the first time “two suns” to the El Olivo Restaurant in the La Residencia Hotel, Deia, under Executive Chef, Guillermo Méndez. The Zaranda Restaurant, under the direction of Fernando Arellano in the Castell Son Claret hotel, is the only other restaurant on the island with this rating. There are a total of 10 restaurants on the island with one sun rating.

Chefsins Mallorca

Was founded in 2012 by a group of 29 top chefs representing an eclectic range of restaurants and cuisine throughout the island and their common objective is to present a slice of Mallorca on a plate. They have joined together to become gastronomy ambassadors participating in local food fairs, organising showcooking, cooking schools, competitions in conjunction with the island’s own Catering School and participating in international fairs to promote Mallorca as a gourmet destination.

Local Produce on a budget

Palma’s First Etno Café
Billed as the city’s first “etno” café, Es Rebost is located on Palma’s main shopping street, Jaime III. The Es Rebost concept is to serve locally grown, ecologically sourced, ingredients from sandwiches to salads and cocas (the Mallorcan pizza style snack), pastries and freshly squeezed juices. The interior décor features traditional Mallorcan handwoven fabrics and a delicatessen area selling a range of local products in attractive packaging which make great gifts.

La Coqueria
In a corner of Palma’s Santa Catalina market, restaurateur Maria Solivellas (of the Can Na Toneta restaurant in Caimari) has teamed up with Katjia Wöhr (Flor de Sal) and taken one of Mallorca’s famous snacks the “coca” (a pizza style savoury) and produced a range of cocas of wafer thin pastry served with seasonally fresh savoury toppings.
